Characteristics

- Large, tufted, and erect bamboo

- Features short-necked pachymorph rhizomes

- Culm height: 15 to 30 meters

- Culm diameter: 6 to 20 cm

- Wall thickness: 1 to 2 cm

- Internode length: 30 to 50 cm

Chemical Composition

  • Cellulose - 40 - 50 % 
  • Hemicellulose  – 25- 30 %
  • Lignin – 20 - 25 % 
  • Ash – 1 - 3 %

Native Range:

• Extends from Taiwan to Bangladesh and Malesia.

Regions:

• Eastern Asia: Taiwan

• China: South-Central and Southeast China

• Indo-China: Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Andaman Islands

• Indian Subcontinent: Bangladesh

• Malesia: Borneo, Java, Lesser Sunda Islands, Malaya, Maluku, Philippines, Sulawesi, Sumatra

• Papuasia: New Guinea

Cultivation Conditions

Plantation Types:

• Suitable for block plantations and those focused on producing edible shoots.

Spacing:

• Recommended spacing is 4x4 meters or 5x5 meters or 6x6 meters.

Time to Maturity:

• Reaches maturity within 3 to 5 years.

Climatic and Soil Requirements

Climate:

• Thrives in regions with average temperatures up to 28°C.

• Requires annual precipitation around 1000 mm.

• Optimal growth at elevations around 600 meters.

Soil:

• While D. asper can adapt to various soil types, it prefers heavy soils with good drainage.
