Dendrobium plants are varied, but most varieties bloom in sprays with delicateflorets that are 1 inch to 2 inches across, blooming along a central sturdy stem. Dendrobium are available in an array of colors including purple, pink, fuchsia, white, yellow, green and bicolors. Purples and whites are the most popular and available. The Dendrobium is available all year round, with a peak in the autumn. There are two types of Dendrobium, the compactum and the phalaenopsis hybrids. The compactum varieties often have multiple canes (fully-grown pseudobulbs), and therefore also several branches with smaller flowers (1 to 7 centimetres). The phalaenopsis hybrids have one or two branches with larger flowers (7 centimetres or larger).

Dendrocalamus Stocksii

Stocksii is a thornless, grazeful, mid-sized variety with loosely spaced  solid erect culms ranging from 30 – 50 mm in diameter and provides good flexibility. Culms attain a height of about 9 m with the diameter of  25-58  mm. Nodes are thickened. Leaves are linear lanceolate and are 10-20 cm  long and 1-2 cm broad. This variety is used for making Furniture; lathi poles, banana stakes. This is the best species for homestead and agroforestry system. Bamboo helps in Carbon sequestration. This is also used as the walking sticks, umbrella handles, roofing for  huts.

Yelakki Banana

Yelakki Banana is one of the most commonly cultivated commercial bananas especially in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. It is the slender, medium tall plant bearing dark green fruits that turn golden yellow with highly fragrant, tasty, powdery and firm fruits. The plants bearing the fruits are smaller with prominent beak packed closely round the axis having a windblown appearance. Unripe fruits turn bright yellow upon ripening. The pulp of the fruit is ivory white in color. It is special for long transportation. The skin is usually thin but the flesh is sweet. It is capable of producing 10-14 hands and 12-15 fingers consisting of 100-150 fruits per plant.

Matured height of the Sweet banana is 25 feet.

The length of the fruit is 4-5’’.

Xanadu – Ornamental

Vanilla planifolia is a species of vanilla orchid.  It is a tropical climbing vine of the orchid. Vanilla Flowers are greenish-yellow, with a diameter of 5 cm (2 in). It requires high humidity, shade and moderate temperature. Vanilla can also be grown hydroponically. It consists of many health benefits.

Red Banana

Red Banana is the most relished and highly prized variety prominent in Southern regions of Tamil Nadu. It is the tall variety, robust with deep red color fruits. Its fruits are large, spindle shaped, short pedicel, blunt tip. The sweet, moderate to distinct flavor. The skin is usually thin but the flesh is 90 fruits per plant. Matured height of the Red Dacca King is 28 feet. The length of the fruit is 5-7’’.  Red Dacca King is an important source of Vitamin C and fibre; improves the haemoglobin level and Vision;  prevents Kidney stones; cures ulcers. It is also known for the stress reliever which helps in controlling the heart rate.

Nendran Banana

Quintal Nendran is the most common cultivar in Kerala. Fruits have a
distinct neck with thick green skin turning to buff yellow on ripening. Fruits remain starchy upon ripening. Peel of the fruit is thick and leathery. This variety is important for processing. This plant has distinct pink coloration in pseudostem. Pulp of the fruit is fleshy, colored; fairly conspicuous, mild flavored, medium sweet. It is capable of producing 5-6 hands and 10-11 fingers consisting of 50-60 fruits per plant. Matured height of the Quintal Nendran King is 3m.

Grand Naine (G9) – Banana

G9 is one of the most commonly cultivated Cavendish bananas. These are the high yielding plantain among all the banana varieties which is introduced to India from Israel. It is the solid green fruit with high export value and economically highly profitable producing 16 hands and 16 fingers consisting of 225-250 fruits per plant. This variety has good wind resistance and excellent landscaping potential. Matured height of the Yellow Banana King is 6-8 feet. The size of Yellow Banana King fruit is 41 mm usually which is the preferred size for export. Length of the fruit is 10.5 – 11’’; Girth of the fruit is 5.5 – 6”.

Ginger

Ginger is an important commercial crop known for its aromatic rhizomes  used as both medicine and spice. The rhizomes of Ginger King are erect, has leafy stems which is about 30 -90 cm in height. The leaves are dark green 15-20 cm long, narrow, lanceolate with a prominent midrib. At the 9th month,green leaves turn yellow. Ginger King promotes healthy heart; prevent ulcers;good for diabetes; regulates cholesterol levels; treats arthritis; boosts immune system.

Dendrocalamus Asper

Asper is a thornless variety and well known for its tender edible shoots. This variety consists of well grown culms which attains the  height of 20 – 30 m with an intermodal length of 20 – 45. Diameter of
the culms is about 8 – 20 cm with a wall thickness of 2 cm. This variety  is the best for making of incense sticks; Construction and Furniture. This is the most preferred species for making edible products. Bamboo helps Carbon sequestration.
